While visiting NYC we were camping about 45 miles outside of the city in New Jersey. Though I drove into the city one day and parked (a whole other story) we found the easiest way to get into the city was by train. With a reasonably priced parking garage not too far from the train station, the cost of tickets for our large family, and the transit time once on the train, we chose to drive into Newark. It was about a half mile walk to the station from the garage but as much as we walk and hike this wasn’t a problem. We weren’t sure what to expect walking through the city but once there we were pleasantly surprised by a few things. The biggest surprise came in the way of Military Park. We had walked past it the first trip into town, but by the 2nd time we got into the area it was already close to lunch time. We had already packed some sandwiches and as we looked around felt it would be a great place to relax and eat. There were nice tables to sit at and the park was very clean. The park even provides books, magazines, and current newspapers in a well kept reading area.
Though I appreciated the peaceful serenity of this park in the middle of the city provided, the kids were thrilled with something so much different. Large foam building blocks they built a for out of, ping pong tables, and plenty of room to run. Though they were excited to get into NYC for the day they definitely enjoyed this small gem in the middle of a city we knew nothing about.
Military Park has a long history and had recently undergone many renovations, but if you are in the city, take some time, relax, and enjoy this beautiful park.
